Retinopathy of prematurity

Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease of the babies born prematurely and with low birth weight. The younger and earlier the baby is born, the higher the risk of disease. In the disease, the peripheral parts of the retina (nerve layer of the eye) do not have enough blood vessels and can not receive oxygen. Consequently, retraction and separation of nerves may be seen in these regions, and this may result in severe vision loss.

In retinopathy of prematurity, it is possible to prevent vision loss with early diagnosis and treatment. For this reason, it is very important to regularly check premature babies with a team of neonatologists and ophthalmologists.
